Hero/Suicide Awareness WOD

For those of you that do not know the Waukegan Police Department just recently lost one of its police officers, Mark Sturtevant to suicide.  Around this time last year in May another police officer by the name of Mark Jacobs also took his own life. So within a year the Waukegan Police Department family has lost two of its outstanding police officers. Suicide is a very touchy subject and a subject that some people are uneasy to talk about. It was a tough decision for me to decide to do a WOD that would be related to suicide but I felt compelled to do so because I cared a lot for these two men. I also felt that it was the right thing to do and to help bring awareness to this touchy subject.

I knew Sturtevant for many years. When I started with the Waukegan Police Department Sturtevant was my first field training officer (first officer to train me). Sturtevant was the first one to show me the ropes on how to be a police officer and I learned many things from him, things I use everyday to keep my fellow officers and me safe. Sturtevant was one of the funniest guys I knew, he always made people laugh and he could always put a smile on your face.

I’m not an expert, nor am I going to try and figure out why Sturtevant and Jacobs did what they did. They had their reasons, I just wish they would have reached out to me or someone else and told us what was going on. It came out of nowhere, no warning signs, no weird talks, no unusual behavior, just one day we were told that they were gone. Sturtevant and I shared lockers next to each other at work and one of the hardest things was seeing Sturtevant’s locker unlocked and his locker empty. It was sad for me because I knew that him and I would never be able to talk before and after work again, him always cracking some jokes and making everyone laugh.

So in honor of Sturtevant and Jacobs and just to raise awareness about suicide in general I put together the following workout.

1 ROUND (FOR CROSSFITTERS)

30 Burpees

40 Push Press (40k/30K) (90/65 lbs)

50 Pull Ups

60 Row for calories

70 Push Ups

80 Sit Ups

90 Air Squats

100 Double Unders

1 ROUND (FOR NON-CROSSFITERS/SUPPORTERS)

10 Burpees

20 Push Press (40K/30K) (90/65 lbs)

30 Pull Ups / Body Rows

40 Row for calories

50 Push Ups

60 Sit Ups

70 Air Squats

80 Single Unders (jumping rope)

As with all WOD’s there will be many scaling options available for those that don’t think they can do the WOD as prescribed. This event is free and open to all. I want to welcome anyone that is interested in attending, even if you may think the workout is too hard. I can tailor this workout for anyone. The most important thing is that you come out to show your support for these great men. This event will be held rain or shine so dress appropriately and be prepared for the weather.
