CrossFit Fire Male Model of the Year

July 2nd, 2009, by Jennie

Not to be outdone by Super Dave, Garth has also made amazing progress.  Garth has also become the number one evangalist for our "no grains" way of life. Just ask his kids...they'll tell you how bad grains are for you! Here was an email we received from Garth about his experience at the Fort:

"Yeah man, right on. I love it. :-)  Awesome. :-) I dig it. Right on. Want a Paleo margarita?"

-Garth

(Ok, so that's not REALLY an email from Garth)

Garth has managed to modify his diet to exclude grains (except guinness), and the change was relatively simple for him. This is truly a testament to the man's willpower. We all have things that we eat on a regular basis that have no "meaning" to us. We'll eat it because it's there and what we're used to, but it doesn't satisfy any craving we have. STOPPIT!

I would like to throw out a challenge to all of you who are still eating grains. Try going grain-free for the next 21 days. It's ONLY 21 days! Stop the whining! Give up the grains for 3 solid weeks and report back to me with your progress. Pay attention to your appetite, mood, sleep patterns, and even your level of fatigue. Write notes to yourself in your workout log here at the Fort to track how you feel. I dare you to do it. NO. I DOUBLE DARE YOU. I don't care if your significant other's favorite thing to cook for dinner is hamburger helper....get him/her on board too and let's do it!

Look at what it did for Garth in just 60 days!

Check out the pose!

Is that even the same person!?

  • Almost forgot an important note. The first question most people ask when you tell them they shouldn't eat grains is, "What should I eat?". It's very simple. You should write this at the top of every shopping list. Meat and vegetables, seeds and nuts, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. If you cut the grains, you can go crazy and eat as much as you want. It mostly won't stick and you'll always fill up fast anyways.
    Good luck!

  • Garth, the Fort's beloved "Superman", is my hero.

Chalk up another small victory for us "old timers" at the fort. Way to go Garth!

  • Just like Jennie, and Super Dave, CrossFit and Paleo makes Garth tanner too! I remember the day that you guys took the Day One photos, thinking, "why the hell are THEY taking photos?? How much leaner/better are they going to look?" Boy was I wrong, what a great testament to your will and commitment!!
Its more amazing that before switching to the diet, you guys were
    A. Eating well already
    B. CrossFitting for 6months+

    Kudos!

  • Jeff, let's not forget about you! You've lost 40lbs since joining the Fort four months ago. That is amazing!!! I personally run into people everyday who say "I can't do it", and give 100 excuses why not (job, family, age, willpower, time, etc). But you've just put your head down and done it!

Tom Mohr shines through again: "If it is to be, it is up to me"

  • Garth, my man... I tell you what, we should get your REAL before pictures. THAT is the journey people should be focusing on. Sure, these 60 days you have worked your ass off and earned every bit of what you've accomplished, absolutely. But the last, what was it, 5-7 years? That transformation is outstanding. Most people see success after a few months and become satisfied. Then they set the bar down and before they know it they're trying to find another "quick fix"! You have been on this journey for years. Awesome example of dedication!

If ever there was a magic pill it is knowledge and determination. You've found'em both. You, Tom and Dave all have such a surge of energy in your quest for ultimate fitness. I'm glad you have found that here at the Fort.
